Dental emergencies are frightening, but calm, quick action in the first hour often makes the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Keep these steps handy.

Knocked-out tooth

Time is critical — a tooth reimplanted within the hour has the best chance.

  1. Pick the tooth up by the crown, never the root.
  2. If dirty, rinse gently with milk or water — do not scrub.
  3. Try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in a cup of milk.
  4. Call us immediately and come straight in.

Severe toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove any trapped food. Take a routine painkiller if needed. Do not place aspirin directly on the gum. Persistent pain usually means infection, so book an urgent appointment.

Broken or chipped tooth

Save any pieces, rinse your mouth, and use a cold compress on the cheek to reduce swelling. Avoid chewing on that side until we see you.

Lost filling or crown

Keep the area clean. A temporary dental cement from the pharmacy can protect the tooth until your visit. Avoid sticky foods on that side.
